In this article we are going to do a speedtest with Surfshark. We used a XPS15 Dell laptop with a maximum internet speed of 100 Mbit down and 100 Mbit upload speed.
Here you can find the results with a single VPN connection, so we are not using multihop. The tests are performed from the Netherlands. So locations like USA, Brazil, Canada and Japan are more then 9000 Km away. The closest servers will always give the fastest results.
USA - NYC
Surfshark is a very userfriendly VPN and one of the cheapest VPN in the market. So for price quality ratio you get very good results. If you compare Surfshark with NordVPN, NordVPN results are alot better. If you stay as closest to your location you will get the best results. In our reviews we also noticed that tumbnails loading of videos was sometimes a little bit slow with Surfshark in comparison with other VPNs. We noticed this especially with VPN connection further from home. What you can also conclude from these speedtests is that the latency is higher than the other VPN providers on this site. This means the Surfshark VPN will be a bit slower.
We also did some tests with multihop VPN. When using the more western VPN locations (i.e. locations USA New York and Canada) the speeds were still solid. However when using the VPN locations more eastern of the world (i.e. locations Singapore and Japan) the speeds dropped extremely. So be very carefull with that.
The use of a VPN will have a negative impact on your internet performance in general. However Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will reduce internet speeds with certain portocols. Some of these protocols are Torrenting, streaming of movies and FTP. In general Surfshark will reduce your speed by 20%, which is a very good score. But all of this depends on the location you are connected to and how far you are from this location. The further you are from a location the more latency you get, see the ping results above, and the more time it takes to send packets from source to destination.
Overall the speeds are good and very workable in most cases. If you want to have the highest speeds we suggest you have a look at NordVPN and ExpressVPN.
